Project Overview
Who? Grade 7 Students at High Tech Middle Chula Vista
When? Spring 2022
When? Spring 2022
How does food tell a story? How do the parts affect the whole? The concept of the “meal” is uniquely human. Traditions and practices around food are a form of internalized understanding about the respective cultures we live in and, by extension, can provide a platform to investigate what differentiates human beings from other forms of life. Kids will enjoy getting to use their hands in ways that may be outside of their norm (food prep, cooking) and investigating the chemistry of their food. They will explore several aspects of food preparation from food safety, food preparation, heat transfer, atoms and molecules, ratios, and proportionality. Students will have opportunities to share parts of themselves in creative ways (video) and get to know more about other cultures and apply their new knowledge of food safety through the preparation of foods from around the world. This project heavily focuses on using food as text, a form of media accessible for students from all dispositions; everybody’s gotta eat!
