DEAR GOVERNOR
DISTANCE LEARNING PROJECT
Here is an example of a project pod that I co-facilitated with Adam Ko. While transitioning to distance learning, the 7th grade team at HTMCV began these pods as a way to document this unique moment in history one week at a time. Each pod lasted five days. In the Dear Governor project pod, students analyzed COVID-19 case data from a state in the U.S., conducted analysis on Desmos, and estimated when the incidence rate would be safe. Then, the students wrote a letter to their respective state's governor. They were sent out on Twitter via the @htmcvdeargov Twitter account.
STUDENT DISCOURSE & DIALOGUE
Though it is hard to replicate the atmosphere of a rich, in-person discussion, we tried to do so in this project. After reading this article and watching this video, students engaged in a Socratic-seminar style discussion on Zoom to answer the following: What needs to happen before we reopen the U.S. economy? The students lifted their evidence from the texts as well as their personal experience to back their claims. The most salient takeaways from their discussion were included in their letters. |
